Arsene Lupin by CelebrenIthil Arsene Lupin by CelebrenIthil
Mesdames, messieurs, I present you Arsène Lupin, gentleman-cambrioleur. Oh, by the way, I hope you don't mind a little bit of breaking and entering!

Does "Les Exploits d'Arsène Lupin" or "Night Hood" reminds you of anything?
Well, if you do recognize that name, then sir or madam, you have my compliments on your taste in cartoons.
(+ additional props if you've read any of the books)

If you don't...well, I frown upon you, and expect you will see to this abhorrent lack of knowledge lest...lest I cast upon your person one of my meanest condescending glares!
(You wouldn't want THAT, wouldn't you!?)

In any case, here's the opening to that amazing series:

Ah, nostalgia!

Also, sleepiness! Ungh, I stayed way too late to finish this one. But heh! I hadn't made one such digital illustration in a long while.
Look! A background!'re looking at it?
Enjoy it.

....good! :D

EDIT: Actually this was made because I got sidetracked while doing this very character... in 3D.
I finally finished it, here is a video if you're interested (BTW sorry, Youtube absolutely murdered (and then stomped a little more on the corpse of) my video's image quality)

Adobe Photoshop CS3, grabbed a few free texture refs from google...and that's it!

...oh hey, a critique button!
Yay! :la:

About feedback: Well, I'd pretty much like to hear what you think about anything, sincerely, I haven't cracked up my digital painting skills for such a piece in quite some time now... notably, there's the presence of a somewhat real background, the almost-absence of lineart, the use of somewhat more complex lighting than my usual stuff...
I also tried to adapt the character to my style and I'd have liked to hear opinions on that but I guess so few of you people have seen the cartoon in the first place...

In any case, thank you for taking the time to view and maybe review this. :)

Night Hood is a pretty good cartoon, it's a cool adaption of Arséne Lupin. My favourite adaption so far though is the old live action TV-series from the 70's, it's a pain though, I had to go through ALOT of effort to find the episodes and then to seperately find the subtitles which I then needed to adjust timing on as I watch because of errors. So I still haven't seen them all, but it's so good because of the disguises. I love the creative freedoms this show took though, they changed the setting with time and place a bit, made him a redhead, those clothes. Yes. So good.

I watched the episodes of the series on Youtube and I loved them :la:
I'm an Arsène Lupin fan anyways. Loved the new film too and I'm buying the Arsene Lupin vs Sherlock Holmes book online now :la:

So, the picture is good, for some reason I really like the curtain and the cloak :D

Woot! Awesome!
People that have watched this show seem so scarce, I'm very happy you are in the lot! :highfive:
...Darn, I'm replying so late, I don't know if you've already received the book but it's quite a delightful read, I hope you enjoy it!

About the picture, thanks!!! Cloth is a fun thing to draw. :)

I watched Night Hood when it first came out and have only recently found a collection of all the episodes. Nostalgia is wonderful.
CelebrenIthil Featured By Owner Jun 14, 2010
I really don't see any amazing cartoons like this anymore, albeit I'm not the keenest TV watcher.
It's almost all badly drawn, weird-styled stuff and bland flash animations(6teen and that crap) nowadays...
Oh well.

Nostalgia, indeed. :3

The mid-90s had so many great toons. I feel sad for today's children with all the crap they have. Sucks.

Wrong country, so I've got no knowledge of the series I'm afraid ;) Before I saw the intro I'd say his lower lip was a bit too thick, but it seemed to be a recurring feature on those characters so I'm assuming it was an intentional nod towards the style. The gentle reflection in the glass is a nice touch. The light effect on his cheek is nicely done too, but I find the shadows on the figure, on skin and clothes and hair, to be much too pale for the darkness indicated by the background.
CelebrenIthil Featured By Owner May 26, 2010
FFFFF- I forgot: Thanks a lot for taking the time to give me feedback! :D
CelebrenIthil Featured By Owner May 26, 2010
Yup yup! Arsène in particular has a serious case of pouty-lower-lip-ness in the cartoon. The intro kinda has a mash of three slightly different art styles- happens when different people work on different parts- so for people not knowing the cartoon it might feel weird, but it's a consistent feature in the show's style itself. :)
(and I'm totally telling everyone so: it's all on Youtube by the guy who put the introduction- pretty much the only place you'll ever get to see it, it's no longer on TV or on sale anywhere it seems- so if you're willing to give it a try, it's good. :) )

As I told the earlier commenter, yes, it's true, the shadows on the character are too pale indeed. I made the background too dark for the character and then didn't want to darken my character enough to have a consistent peice because I didn't felt like hiding my paint work on the said character... so I am very much to blame.
Noss91 Featured By Owner May 23, 2010   Traditional Artist

I actually see this as a rather flat piece, although you made very nice lighting here (: The thing missing is the shade ;) Make some darker parts on the face for example, and pretty much everywhere, to get a more dramatic look! (: I think it would suit this picture very well since it already has a slight dramatic feel to it ;)

Other than that, I want more textures! The hair is far too blurry, as are the clothes and the background. Just in case, I'll give you a link to an awesome digital painter ;) `Dianae, know her? I suggest you look a lot at her tutorials and wips, to learn more about good textures and lighting (:

The rest is really good! Keep it up (:
CelebrenIthil Featured By Owner May 26, 2010
Yeessss I'm guilty of having a big difference in the darkness of the character and the background. I had no background in mind when I did this and when I finally worked up something it ended up extremely dark but I had colored my character in "normal brightness" and I didn't want to hide him in shadows so here I go with BAD COMPOSITION. x_x
I guess I should make another, DRAMATIC VERSION with proper shading on the character to have him fit naturally in the environment and keep this one because I'm a wanker I want people to see the character properly too....

I didn't know of Dianae but thanks a lot for the link, she's totally going into my deviantwatches... ;)

About the crispness, well the original was bigger but I resized it down and it became somewhat blurrier... :/
I also wanted to keep a semi-cartoony feel to the character to be consistent with the animated show, and tried not to texture anything a lot in order to tone down the realism.
So yeah, there's this issue of sitting halfway between the cartoony style of the tv series and a very realistic painting like Dianae does. >_<"

Thanks for the feedback!
Noss91 Featured By Owner May 31, 2010   Traditional Artist
It happens sometimes d:

And it's not like you need to paint as realistically as Dianae does, the problem most people have, is that when they get an artist to learn from, they expect that they have to copy everything about their art. Which is absolutely not the case, being INSPIRED and LEARNING FROM means... Use their technique and learn from their knowledge, but keep your own way of drawing (:

You're welcome! :D
geralin Featured By Owner May 23, 2010  Hobbyist

To my shame I must admit that I have never heard of this comic show :D
But this painting is really outstanding... I don't know what I could critique at this piece.
I love how the different light sources have an effect and throw different shadows.
The outlineless and soft colouring give it a pastell feeling but all the details give it a great richness. I only would have liked a few more folds on his clothing, the scarf is fine though.
Otherwise, I can just stare in awe. :)
CelebrenIthil Featured By Owner May 26, 2010
Ah, you know how it is, if it's not USA-ian content then chances are it won't be shown worldwide... But! Thanks to a particular Youtuber, Zaitis, you can watch the whole show! :D Hurray!
If you rather like the style, there are more other cartoons by Cinar that do not pass on TV or are buyable in DVD anywhere anymore that are uploaded (I know there is "The Legend of Calamity Jane", maybe there's "Blake and Mortimer" too but I'm not sure, and then there's "Belphegor" that's another French cartoon by France1, etc...)

Thank you so much for the compliments!
I did try to keep a cartoony feel to it even if it was painting in a more realistic manner than the show itself and without outlines. :)
You do point an issue I've battled with: how realistic the clothes should look like. For the face, it's somewhat easy, you just make cartoony features but yeah, I've battled with the clothing and how much it should fold and be shaped realistically and how much to texture it...

Finally, thank you so much, so are extremely kind and ILU. :glomp:

I like the absence of lines. And whoa... I just watched the little intro. That looks epic! You definitely have your own style while keeping true to the character! The only thing I might suggest is a slight amount of darker shading where you want to make something pop, like in the eyes and right under of the scarf. Not anything huge or dark, but just that very fine line for total absence of light. The lights and shadows on the rest of the piece are stunning, and I also love the cape!
CelebrenIthil Featured By Owner May 23, 2010
Thanks a lot for the feedback (and the compliments!!!:heart::heart:)
I think the shadows could be deepened under the scarf, very true. About the eyes tough, I dunno if you mean the eyeballs or the area around the eyes? In any case, the guy has ridiculously pale irises in the cartoon (I had a hard time to figure out what color they are (my best guess was extremely pale grey-green ish...)) which looks kinda weird but I'm not willing to touch their color much because I feel it's part of the character design. ._."

(And, yeah, the series' all uploaded on Youtube by the guy who put the intro so...give it a try if you're interested! It is for somewhat young audiences but not so much (people totally try to kill each other and it rocks XD))

Thank you so much again!
Doodlee-a Featured By Owner May 23, 2010  Student Digital Artist
For the eyes, I mostly meant the eyelash area, though there is shading behind the iris as well, if you didn't know.
Sounds fun!
And you're welcome!
